Surrounded by the sea, Taiwan has abundant seawater resources, creating an opportunity that researchers at National Sun Yat-sen University have begun to explore. A research team led by Distinguished Professor Chen Chun-Hu of the Department of Chemistry has developed a prototype system for producing hydrogen through alkaline seawater electrolysis.
After the seawater is alkalized, the system uses catalysts with both protective and active properties to drive the electrochemical reaction, producing hydrogen and purified water. According to the research team, the hydrogen production cost can be reduced to approximately 1% of that of conventional methods. In addition to significantly lowering costs, the process can also help avoid the generation of large amounts of toxic chlorine gas, which may occur in conventional seawater electrolysis.
